Rebate drops on 1 May 2026
The STC factor falls from 8.4 to 6.8 per kWh from 1 May 2026. A typical 13.5kWh battery drops from a ~$4,557 rebate to ~$3,488 — a $1,069 loss if you wait.
Then every 6 months after that
From May 2026 the STC factor steps down every 6 months (January and July) until the program ends in 2030. The longer you wait, the smaller the rebate.
Federal Program

THE CHEAPER HOME
BATTERIES PROGRAM

Australia’s federal government launched this program in July 2025, backed by $7.2 billion in funding through to 2030. It reduces the upfront cost of eligible home battery systems by approximately 30% — applied automatically by your installer at point of sale.

The discount works through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) — the same mechanism used for solar panel rebates. You don’t need to apply separately. Your accredited installer handles everything and the discount comes off your invoice.

Available to homeowners, small businesses & community organisations
Eligible systems: 5–100kWh usable battery capacity
Battery must be on the SAA accredited list
Applied automatically — no government application required
Can be stacked with ACT Sustainable Household Scheme loan

FAQ

BATTERY REBATE
QUESTIONS ANSWERED

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program is a federal government initiative launched July 2025, backed by $7.2 billion in funding through to 2030. It reduces the upfront cost of eligible home battery systems (5–100kWh) by approximately 30% via Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs). The discount is applied automatically by your accredited installer — you don't fill in any government forms. Read more at energy.gov.au.

From 1 May 2026 the STC factor drops from 8.4 to 6.8 per kWh usable capacity. For a 13.5kWh battery this means the rebate drops from approximately $4,557 to $3,488 — a saving of $1,069 by acting before May. After May 2026, the factor steps down again every 6 months (January and July each year) until 2030. Larger batteries are also hit by tapering: full support applies to the first 14kWh, reduced support above 14kWh, and minimal support above 28kWh.

ACT residents benefit from two stacked incentives: (1) The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program — ~30% off upfront, applied by your installer. (2) The ACT Sustainable Household Scheme — a low-interest loan of $2,000–$15,000 at 3% fixed interest over up to 10 years to cover remaining costs. Concession card holders may access zero-interest loans and additional rebates up to $5,000 through the Home Energy Support Program. ACT Sustainable Household Scheme.

South Coast NSW homeowners qualify for the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program (approximately 30% discount). The NSW state battery rebate ended 30 June 2025. However, from 1 July 2025 the NSW Government nearly doubled its Virtual Power Plant (VPP) incentive — eligible battery owners earn additional bill credits by sharing stored energy during peak demand periods. This VPP incentive can be stacked with the federal rebate.

No. As an SAA accredited installer, Meta Electrical & Solar creates the Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) on your behalf and applies the discount directly off your invoice price. There is no government portal to register with and no forms to submit. The rebate is confirmed in your written quote before installation.

Yes — battery retrofits to existing solar systems are eligible for the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, provided your current inverter is compatible (or you upgrade to a hybrid inverter) and the battery is on the SAA accredited product list. We assess compatibility during your free site assessment.

Battery sizing should be based on your evening electricity usage, not maximising the rebate. From 1 May 2026 the rebate tapering actually removes the incentive to oversize — support reduces significantly above 14kWh. Most Canberra and South Coast homes are well-served by a 10–16kWh system. We provide a full energy analysis and recommendation in your free quote.

Yes — this is one of the best financial combinations available in Australia. The federal rebate reduces your upfront cost by 30%, then the ACT Sustainable Household Scheme loan can finance the remaining amount at 3% fixed interest over 10 years. Loan approval is through Brighte (the scheme’s delivery partner) and is subject to their standard lending criteria.
